| SLVDC offers canine obedience classes to the general public twice a year. Below are some FAQ’s regarding the classes: When are classes held? Obedience classes are held twice a year, in the spring and fall. Classes are scheduled for Tuesday evenings and sessions run for six consecutive weeks. What is covered in class? We teach basic obedience which encompasses sit, down, stay, and walking politely on leash. In short, what your dog needs to know in order to be a welcome member of the family. Are there different levels offered? Yes, we keep young puppies in one class and larger, older dogs in a beginner adult class. What is S.T.A.R. Puppy? S.T.A.R. Puppy is an American Kennel Club certificate program for puppies which incorporates instruction for both basic obedience and responsible ownership. AKC requires participation in the entire six-week session in order to be eligible to receive a S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate. The class is taught by an AKC Canine Good Citizen test evaluator. How old does a puppy have to be? At least 8 weeks old to participate in puppy class, or as soon as you would get a puppy from a reputable breeder. This is when a puppy is a “blank slate” and very impressionable so you want to start off on the right foot, right from the beginning. What is not covered in class? Due to being in a class situation and having a limited amount of time each week, behavioral issues cannot be handled in depth. While we may be able to offer suggestions for you to try, we cannot work magic in the time we have available. We would be able to refer you to someone who could work with you one-on-one regarding problem issues. Some dogs who lack socialization skills may need to take this route before being able to participate in a class setting. How are classes taught? We use positive reinforcement methods of training, praise and treats are both used as rewards. We teach YOU how to teach your dog, we DO NOT train your dog for you! Positive reinforcement builds a teamwork bond between dog and owner and this is the basis for our classes. Let’s have fun! How do I sign up for class? Sign-up for obedience class is held the Tuesday evening prior to the start of class sessions, in the Banford Elementary School cafeteria at 7 pm. What do I need to bring to sign-up? You will need to bring your dog’s vaccination record, especially for rabies. We do realize that young pups cannot receive rabies vaccines until four months of age, it is okay for them to be in class before this time and actually encouraged. Please do not bring dogs to sign-up due to health regulations in a cafeteria. How much do classes cost? The entire six week session of classes costs $75.00. We accept cash and checks made payable to SLVDC. This is payable at sign-up. Question not answered here? Contact Judi Questel |
